What is the difference between cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting?
The key difference between sanitizing and disinfecting is the type of chemical involved and the length of time it is left on a surface. For many disinfectants, 10 minutes is the appropriate dwell time. However, be sure to read instructions on the chemical product to ensure proper disinfection.
  • Cleaning refers to the removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. Cleaning does not kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.
  • Sanitizing – Like hand sanitizer is used to decrease germs/bacteria
  • Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.
 
IC Clearview’s suggestions:
Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces daily in household common areas (e.g. tables, hard-backed chairs, doorknobs, light switches, remotes, handles, desks, toilets, sinks)
If someone in the home is consistently having to work outside of the home, ie health care, police, fire, medic etc.  or if you are in frequent contact with people, I would advise you dedicate an area (like your garage) to disrobe and leave your shoes there and wash all clothing as soon as possible.
